PHIL WOODS featuring IORDANIS TSOMIDIS - GREEK COOKING

Progressive Jazz from1967 USA. One of my fave lp. 4 killer tracks at least .One of the more unusual recordings in Phil Woods' considerable discography, Greek Cooking features the alto saxophonist leading a tentet with a distinctly Greek flavor, including four Greek musicians. None of them have become household names in jazz, though oud player George Mgrdichian later sat in with the Dave Brubeck Quartet during a few concerts. First press has gatefold cover

About Iordanis Tsomidis A little bit about JORDAN He was born in 1933 in Kokkinia(Piraeaus) from parents refugees with origin from Sampsoynta. In the age of 12 years he began to learn mpoyzoyki and violin and later he began to present himself in small theatres as child-talent. At the same time he got into classic sports and in 1950 was nominated champion in Greece in the 5.000 metres in the category of adolescents. The same roughly season he will make the first professional steps in the popular song, participating in popular orchestras that toured the nightclubs of province: in Volos, in Arta,in Preveza, in Thessalonica and in Agrinio. Turning in Piraeus, he will work in the nightclub of “Peribola” in Kokkinia, with the famous Prodromos Tsaoysakis. From it was then established as one of the best mpoyzoyki players in popular stages. In 1957 Jordan, like many other other skilfull mpoyzoyki players, goes to America. For 15 roughly years he plays on stages of New York, Los Angeles, San Fransisco, Holywood, Las Vegas, and many more. There he becomes wellknown not only to his Greek fellow countrymen, but also in the American listeners, acquiring famous friends and admirers, such as Jack Nickolson, Jane Fonda, Sirley Maklein and many others. In 1973 Jordan returns to Greece and tries to make his own night club. Unfortunately he didn't make it and he was forced to go abroad again. He plays again in America and then in concerts all over Europe, in various cities of England, Holland and Germany. During his time there he recorded a lot of disks, among them is a jazz disk (Greek cooking) that was recorded in 1966 with sax player Phil Woods and other musicians of the multinational scene of New York. The last decade Tsomidis choose to work in small clubs, where his mpoyzoyki had the leading role. The first thing that became immediately clear to the shopkeepers, and also to the customers was that Jordan would go up on stage only when he felt like it and usually that was at the late hours after 2 o clock in the morning. His program was based on the following logic: “There is no program, we play whatever we like whenever we like it”. The improvisation was a basic characteristic of Tsomidis skill, contrary to the modern everyday routine, where in most if not all the shops the instrumentalists are forced to function in the service of “singer-trade name”, playing almost the role of a well programmed Jukebox. Jordan's improvisations (taksimi) were something special. His luthier and friend Panagiotis Varlas says characteristically: “Jordan can play a taksimi for half an hour , without repeating not even one phrase, without copying a single note”. For Jordan we can say with no doubt that he was one of the richest mpoyzoyki players, not rich in money but in sound, variety and feelings. Rip 2006 ...We will remember you always.

THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SEX OPERA BAND - ANITA

Very Rare . Supposedly only sold through sex shops in Amsterdam during a short time at the end of the 60s, this is a truly bizarre psychedelic freak-out of an album. There isn't too much information about it out on the net, but apparently it is rumored that this was recorded at 1969 by RONALD WESTBROOK (member of the popular Dutch rock band Sandy Coast)on the small Dutch Sexclusief label.

There is a sticker of a girl (in flame) on the cover . Some copies has missing the girl sticker.

BY REQUEST: TRAD GRAS OCH STENAR - S/T

From Scented Gardens of the Mind

* Bo Anders Persson - guitar, vocals, violin, flute
* Arne Eriksson - piano, cello, flute
* Torbjorn Abelli - bass, jew's harp, flute
* Thomas Gartz - drums, jew's harp, flute, vocals
* Jakob Sjoholm - guitars (2-3)

This is the last part in a story that started with Mecki Mark Men and (International) Harvester. Their new name meant Trees, Grass & Stones (symbolising their earthbound music), in case you didn't know.

Much the same way that Grateful Dead would eventually return to their country roots, these Swedes did the same, discovering the value of their ancestor's folk music and Swedish landscapes. TGS combined this with a do-it-yourself attitude, that anyone could start playing in a rock group which inspired a whole new generation of Swedish groups. Their music in itself wasn't fantastic when analysed in a scientific way. It was played from the heart: "false notes doesn't matter, it's the spirit and joy of performing that counts!". TGS took part in the planning of the Swedish version of Woodstock, the Gardet festivals (situated in a green area in the outskirts of Stockholm). The first of these was arranged from 12-14 June 1970 (where TGS was the opening act), and was the first public appearance of many groups from the underground movement and also giving birth to the independent label Silence. Later festivals were held from 20-23 August in 1970 and 1971. TGS's first album included cover versions of "Satisfaction" and "All Along The Watchtower" coupled with Swedish folk music and even a couple of reasonably coherent original tracks: "The Silver River Of Truth" and "The Black Pearl", musically these represented the band at their best.

Rock For Kropp Och Sjal included one of their signature songs, "In Kommer Gosta" (written by Philemon Arthur & The Dung).

The title track (rock for body and soul) lasted for 25 minutes, but mainly repeated the same groove all the time, much like a mantra. Generally, this album was less effective than their first. Thomas Gartz later became a member of Arbete & Fritid.

Peloquin / Sauvageau - Laissez-nous vous embrasser ou vous avez mal

Launched in 1972, LAISSEZ-NOUS VOUS EMBRASSER OÙ VOUS AVEZ MAL is one of the most original record ever made in Quebec. Though avant-garde, it still managed to garner radio support and wide public attention thanks to the trance-like track "Monsieur L'Indien".

The "Us" in Let us kiss you where it hurts is CLAUDE PÉLOQUIN, controversial poet, and JEAN SAUVAGEAU, electronic music pioneer. Together after memorable trips and artistic happenings throughout the 60's, they came up with this eccentric avant-garde masterpiece. With topics ranging from revolution (Monsieur Emiliano), to exploitation (Monsieur L'Indien), vasectomy (Sterilization) or even scatology (Mama Vagina), the record exploded onto the local scene during the dark ages of Quebec Pop Music (something very similar to what's happening now).

Claude Péloquin, the vocalist, can be heard laughing, screaming, babbling into the mike as he "cracks open a brew" overtop a cocktail of explosive and highly original electronic music. A wall of sound shifting from synthetic psychedelic ambience, doped out choir to fucked up western.

Techno spoken word? Electroclash? Experimental Rock? Pretty far from the hippie stuff you'd expect for the times!

Bonus track: "L'Hotel Dieu" and "Les Bottes de St-Tite" are taken from a single only.

Track List
01. Monsieur L'indien

02. Emiliano

03. L'Hymne International Des Clown

04. Black Spaghetti

05. Le Cirque

06. Mama Vagina

07. Sterilization

08. Les Grands Silencieux

HOOTCH - S/T

From Acid Archives
"Hootch" 1974 (Pro-Gress 4844) [blank back cvr; 500p]
"Hootch" 1994 (Rollocks, Belgium) [400p]

Obscure high school-project westcoasty heroin vibe guitar jams, mostly instrumental with two good vocal cuts; the rest is laidback snakey Garcia-type workouts with a slightly eerie vibe. One of the better LPs in this bag, recommended to those into non-heavy early 70s psych. "Arabian Style" is a personal fave. Primitive purple silkscreened sleeve. [PL]

DANDELION - S/T

Dandelion's first album was first released in 1979 (FRANCE) as a tiny private pressing of only 300 copies. It has a charming, amateurish homemade vibe with some outstanding tracks like '' Winter Tale'' (featuring sound effects, reverberating guitars and lost vocals which bring to mind other lost bands like Tony, Caro & John or Agincourt), the acoustic '' La Farfalla'' with nice femme vocals and the atmospheric, organ dominated '' Sometimes'' , which opens the album in a impressive way..

DAYDE - J'AIME

From Scented Gardens Of The Mind

Joel Dayde was the vocalist of Zoo at the time of their first LP in 1969. His solo career had a promising start with J'Aime (1971), enhanced by the guitar duties of Claude Engel (ex-Omega Plus and Magma). This is nice jazzy rock. White Soul Lp was a disappointing follow-up and Mamy Blue Lp moved closer to maintream easy listening.

From Acid Archives

"Whitewood" 197 (Exotic EXS-1-91172) [plain white sleeve]
"Whitewood" 1999 (Rockadelic 36)
[600p; +1 track] [4]

One of the more obscure Rockadelics is a crude, unpolished gem that deserves time to manifest itself. A reissue of one of those "we'll put music to your lyrics" song-poem artefacts, but this one breathes with an eerie dementia unlike the usual laugh riots; imagine a suicidal Boa or Ant Trip Ceremony with some fire up their ass. Title track is an instant classic, and 2/3rds is local late 60s garage psych the way you want it. The instrumental fillers include a room-clearing polka-rock fusion that could have been left off, though it does add to the spooky desolate Viet Vet vibe, as does the new front cover design. The bonus track comes from an inferior second LP from this same unsuccesful songwriter. [PL]
